Snøhetta was established in 1987 and is located in Oslo and New York City. The firm, which is named after the mountain Snøhetta Dovre, has around 140 employees, with 20 different nationalities, working on projects in Europe, Asia, Middle East, Africa and USA. In 1989 they won the competition for the Library of Alexandria, and has since become world famous including the Opera House in Oslo, September 11 Memorial Pavilion at Ground Zero in NY and King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture in Saudi Arabia.
The architectural firm counts today 100 employees in Oslo and 40 in the US – and all 20 nationalities are represented within the company. Snøhetta has two majority shareholders, Kjetil Thorsen Trædal and Craig Dykers.
Snøhetta has enjoyed strong growth, and we have this year completed project number 100, while we have 14 major projects under construction and 40 projects on the drawing board. The growth phase puts naturally a lot of pressure on the organization in all areas, including within the legal assessments before, during and after the projects. Opera in Busan in South Korea, cave painting Museum of Lascaux in France, Metro station in Riyadh and new conference center in Annecy are among the new projects we have won.
Føyen Torkildsen has assisted us over the years and guided us safely through many complicated processes and legal reviews. They have also been an important partner in implementing the all major contracts, risk consulting, creation in the US, shareholder relations and dispute resolution. Not least was the lawyers incredibly important advisers and moral support by our first big victory – when we won the competition for the library in Alexandria. Good legal assistance has also been an important and central factor in the development of our corporate structure as it stands today.
Føyen Torkildsen has a real understanding of our industry in general and our company in particular challenges. I think this is about the will to go in and really understand what it means to produce architecture. The ability to see the whole – not only with the lawyer eyes. Thus, they also have very good advisers, says senior partner Kjetil T. Thorsen, Snøhetta AS.
